Backup Software for Photos

Hi Folks

Just wondering what everyone uses to do this.

I use Microsoft SyncToy to do this and have matching folder pairs to an external hard drive.

However, the software has been crashing a bit of late.

Haha. But it's not the best when you have updated files in different folders for your shoots, particulary if you go back to work on old images - the folder pair system of SyncToy is brilliant for that.

I hardly ever shift pics out of their original folders.

It might bite me sooner or later but I have my files set out like C:/Pics/Garth Canon5D2/2011/1108August/22ndStanleySunset

I always have an unchanged copy of the raw and any changes are saved as different file types.

So in that folder I might have IMG2374.CR2, IMG2374.TIF, IMG2374.JPG & IMG2374smaller.JPG.

If I change one of these it will become for E.G. IMG2374A.JPG.

Thats getting off your original topic but it's why "drag and drop" to Drive:E works for me so far.

Good points - but as I jump all over the place, a solution similar to SyncToy works darn well as it mirrors your folders exactly and if you do it in one group copy regulary, you don't miss anything particularly your sidecar file for your raw files. Not to mention the time you save,

Helpful for your Lightroom Catalog too, those little changes add up over time as you jump around!

I just need a more robust solution than SyncToy.

I have a Mac and use Time Machine to keep a backup of everything. Works really well and did an amazing job at restoring all my files when my hard drive died last year. There are products for Windows like Norton Ghost that do a similar job.

However I also use Backblaze (www.backblaze.com, which works for Windows and Mac) to keep an off-site backup of all my photos. It's a small monthly cost ($5 I think) but unlimited storage. And if the house burns down or we get burgled, I still have a backup.
