"Haha Bob. What a commission! I agree with you that in the end I think it is about your own artistic integrity. And I understand that for those making a living from photography, there are current popular trends which influence potential buyers, and…"

Bob Simpson commented on Shane Viper's blog post HDR Overcooked or not?
"Good article Hillary. At some stage we all contemplate how far we are prepared to go with digital imagery and processing but there are no hard rules. I recently had to make a choice when a potential customer requested a commissioned panorama of a…"

"Another view, in a recent blog posted by Kevin McNeal, a photographer from America's Pacific Northwest:"Every photographer, at one point, when sharing images on social media sites has been asked if the image is “photoshopped”.…"

Bob Simpson commented on Shane Viper's blog post HDR Overcooked or not?
"I wasn't really thinking of Peter Eastway as a chronic over-saturator, but he does go in some unusual directions that don't always appeal to me. But I always respect the artistic element of his work....his use of colour is a lot more…"

Robert Norman commented on Shane Viper's blog post HDR Overcooked or not?
"Bob Yes it can be an interesting workshop when you have Peter Eastway and Christian in the same room. I like some of Peter's work because it is technically excellent, but he'd probably be the first to admit he's a colour…"

Bob Simpson commented on Shane Viper's blog post HDR Overcooked or not?
"Too true Robert - for some of us, the over-saturated approach is a phase we go through (I sure did when I look back over my images.....I hope I'm past it!), and for some it becomes a trademark. There are some well known photographers whose…"

Robert Norman commented on Shane Viper's blog post HDR Overcooked or not?
"I think it's a bit like some very famous Australian landscape photographers who have made a career our of (successfully) selling images by pushing the saturation slider to 100%. A lot of people buy them because they are so striking.…"

Bob Simpson commented on Shane Viper's blog post HDR Overcooked or not?
"Good question Shane....I really think the popularity of the overblown HDR look in landscape photography is a fad - in a few years time people will look back at it and say ..'what were we thinking?!?'. Photomatix and the like are…"

Robert Norman commented on Shane Viper's blog post HDR Overcooked or not?
"When I first saw HDR images I was attracted to their special look in some situations and for a time I produced a number of HDR images. I still think they work in some cases, but I haven't made a true HDR image in the past 12 months. While…"

"Hilary, your comments above are right on. It's about the alchemy, the identification and interaction with nature that drive great landscape photos. Look at Jem Southam. I do not shy away from using available means for enhancing photos, and…"

"For me, Shane, it's about what turns me on....not what the masses prefer. And the photography that sings for me from others, is the stuff that comes from deep connections and the ability to share a transformation of self that is the alchemy of…"

"Hmmm...food for thought there Hilary :) Yep agree, Photography is art and as such it is subjective, each individual has their own taste.  Like you I prefer images that have a more natural look to them and I also prefer to keep my images as…"

Hillary Younger commented on Shane Viper's blog post HDR Overcooked or not?
"Photography, after all, is art....we are really not representing reality per se, but our inspired vision of it. For me, Photomatrix-style obvious HDR work is unappealing, and I prefer images to have a more natural look. But I do enjoy the…"

HDR Overcooked or not?

Asked this question over at Facebook.  I was interested in the responses of people who don't know the technical aspects of photography as well as we do, but now I would like to get your responses...

Feeling inadequate

I really shouldn't be writing this now...my head is supposed to be in an essay on identity...but in a way this post does go towards that.

My identity as a photographer...

I suppose at the outset I should say I class myself as an amateur who would love to be a pro but feel that I am in no way near that status....hence the title of the blog....

Since I was about 16, I am now 39, I have had a camera of some sort in my hand, mainly point and shoots cause I have not been…
