I remember when I was a keen amateur photographer - every week heading off to my local camera club, eager to see how I had fared in the fortnightly competitions and looking forward to catching up with my friends.
It's probably one of the few clubs I have been a member of where I actually felt that there was a reciprocal nature to the knowledge. I could offer as much of my own experience and learning as the skills, tips and tricks that were being taught to me (by people who kept on going on about shooting with equipment that was purchased before I was born, blah blah blah........)
I loved it and I miss it.
Being able to look at peoples images and ask them questions about their technique or equipment. Trying to explain your own interpretation of a particular scene or location. Or just sharing images and enjoying the images that were being shared.
Of course I would frequently get it wrong in someone’s eyes and receive (not so) constructive criticism but that’s all part of the excitement of putting your stuff out there.
I don’t frequent camera clubs too often these days, perhaps only when invited to give presentations - actually since turning professional about 7 years ago, I have never felt comfortable about being a member, I know this is a discomfort of my own making - silly really!
In a professional capacity, I often get asked to comment on peoples images and frequently get feedback on my own (It's not always easy to hear!)
I love the internet and it's social abilities, so i created www.landscapephotographeronline.com and for the first time in a long time feel like I’m on my way to camera club, waiting to see what everyone else has been up to.
I can’t wait to see some other images on this site and (hopefully) build a community of like-minded people to show off their talents and share their knowledge. I hope it will be just like camera club but without the stale biscuits.
I’m making a commitment to blog weekly (and I’m stating this publically in an effort to stick to it!)
I will try to make the blogs informative and focused on photography and getting images out there. I have lots of photography and business experience to share and I bet you have things to share too? You should think about blogging on the site too. If you have any topics you would like me to ramble on about, feel free to sugest them.
