Hey all,

I have been thinking of heading out to the snow fields over the winter break to try and find some awesome landscapes. I have been doing some research on the net, but i must admit im not having much luck. I was wondering if there were any must see places out in the white, COLD, wilderness. I would love to hear any of your responses as Im keen as mustard to head out there, but dont want to get there and umm and arr when i get there.

Also, any must have kit. Especially for camping, as I will be trying to build up the camping equipment supplies for future uses. I dont have much, actually I have bugger all. A sleeping bag, thats about it, oh and a pack.

thanks so much, cant wait to hear the replies.

I'll read this thread with sustained interest, as I too am thinking of heading up into the mountains a couple of times this year. The Victoria High Country, in my opinion, is the best in Australia. Such places include

- Mount buffalo (the cathedral is an incredible granite outcrop)

- Mount feathertop take fom mount hotham

- Wallaces hut - the oldest cattlemen's hut in Australia

- Craig's hut - the hut used in the filming of 'The Man From Snow River'

- Mount stirling

In regards to the camping equipment - I'm sure the best idea would be to head to an outdoor store and ask... You don't want to screw around in temperatures like that!

Tim,

agreed 110%. I would love to get to the Victoria High Country, just a little strapped for time and $$$$$$$$$$$$. That Craigs Hut is a gem, I have dreamt about getting my own photograph of that for ever and a day, after seeing all the amazing shots from other photographers. One day!!!!

Ill keep them in mind for next time.

Thanks

Great topic. The Vic snowfields are great. As mentioned Mt Buffalo has some of the best rock formations in the state. And amazing sunsets over the mountain give you some great chances especially in the snow. PLUS, getting up Buffalo is easier then the other big mountains such as Hotham, which has to be one of the scariest drives in the snow.

As for camping gear - you would be suggesting a sleeping bag that goes -10, and a good tent. I have walked the Razorback walk in last Autumn and got 3 inches of snow in 3hrs over night. Magical, but COLD!

Good luck, look forward to seeing some shots. Might see you up there.

Good luck with the snow Daniel....it makes for some great landscape shots. There's a list of camping/hiking gear I use on my website (http://www.bobsimpsonlandscapephotography.com/about/hiking) that might be some use to you....I haven't ventured into the snow for quite a few years but I still go to some pretty cold spots in the New England tablelands. There's lots of info about gear on the internet if you search around.

hey all. After some weeks of research, I have decided to head up to Charlottes Pass, just outside Jindabyne. There is a lake there by the name of blue lake. Over the christmas holidays last year i was planning on walking there with the family as we go to Thredbo for Christmas every year. Unfortunately I was sick for the whole time and only managed to walk up to Kosziosko (barley mind you). So i have braved my fears of camping alone out there for a few days and hopefully will bring back some shots to share with you all. I will also try to visit the VIC snow fields during the winter too.

I am also thinking of trying to visit a couple of times to photograph the main range and, with some guidance from Ian, Tom Putt and a another friend, try and publish a book. I have always dreamt of publishing my own book and i am yet to find anyone who has done one on the main range.

Cheers guys -- wish me luck ;-))

Daniel
